My father in law needs a new used car and asked me what to buy. I believe in the Honda Accord and have owned three but in my experience they cannot build a decent automatic trans-axle. Was there a year where Honda got it right? I have only ever owned the 4 cylinder automatic and will be looking for the same for him.

My experience shows their trans-axles fail around 160,000 km. (100,000 miles).

Is there a year where they got the transmission right?

I eyeing a 2005 Honda Accord 4 cly automatic right now.

My experience with the Honda Accord includes:

1994 Honda accord bought at 160,000km sold at 400,000 ish first trans failed at 180,000km.
2000 Honda accord bought at 163,000km currently sitting at 402,000 km. First Tans failed at 160,000km ish. Second failed a 380,000 ish.
2001 Honda accord bought at 150,000km first trans failed at 155,000 km ish.

 

Over on a different board I participate in, it is widely reported the 2006-2010 transmissions are pretty reliable.

 

I know I'll get crucified for saying this, but why not get a Toyota Camry? My son's wife sold her 98 Camry last year. It had 380K miles on it, and everything still worked. They took it on many road trips, getting 40mpg. She sold it because of rust and getting an 08 Pilot due to our winters. That and she wanted something that sat a little higher off the ground.

 

There is nothing wrong with considering other makes and models.
