Default School me on the auto trans...

Tips/Tricks/Hints/Oddities etc...

No I don't have any lights or thing anything is particularly wrong, Story is the trans was replaced somewhere in 06, (roughly 120k) The fluid is ok right now but I do want to do a change so I can track the mileage on the fluid.

trans seems to shift similar to my pop's miata, oddly enough. I kinda worry about it hunting sometimes, but then I remember it's not a v8 and it's working with far less power so theres gonna be a bit more shifting.

I just see it locking the TC and then having to drop out of lock, and sometimes it seems to take awhile to lock back up. Again I'm not sure it's an issue exactly, and I know I'm definitely a gear shifter (truck driver) so I naturally think I know better than the auto transmission. lol

I'm up to just under 25mpg (this pleases me greatly) with mixed driving so it's not hurting anything there.

anyhow I just was looking for things to look out for on these things... I've seen quite a few threads about solenoids, and I'm considering cleaning them as a preventative kinda deal with a fluid change.

Auto Trans in the 94-97 years were very reliable. We see very few posts on AT's from this era. My 94EX is approaching 250K and shifts smooth/quickly.

Consensus is that regular changes (2-3 yrs or 30K miles) is money well spent. You are overdue for a ATF change if it's never been changed since 06. Honda ATF is highly recommended for best performance.

Solenoids rarely fail, but there are screens on them that can become blocked. Easy to check them w/ a 12v power source. If they click solidly, they are OK.

good luck

Totally agree with TX.

The 5th gen auto trans is a solid piece.

Again, use Honda trans fluid (dealer, online, carquest). Personally I'd do two drain and fills with a small amount of driving between the two - so you are looking about 6 qts or so.

Next, since the trans was changed once before.....there is a throttle control cable that runs from the TB to the trans. You want to be sure it is properly adjusted and moving as it should......download the free manual for the 94 found in the sticky at the top of this section - "Common DIY Info" and use that to check the cable adjustment/movement.
