Default Sound cuts out, but radio stays on

I have 2008 Accord LX that is having dome radio trouble. Recently, the sound has started to completely cut out while listening to the radio. It cuts out when listening to whether my Sirius XM radio or the CD player. Sometimes the speakers will just make a loud pop sound and the sound is gone and other time the speakers will make this thump thump thump sound and then the sound will cut out. I checked the fuses that control the radio and none of them are blown. These are fuses 16 and 18 on the drivers side fuse box and fuse 15 in the under-hood box. The Sirius is plugged into one of the A/C adapter outlets and the other one is not being used. I am not sure at this point what could be the issue. I have not brought the car for anyone to look at yet and I just wanted to get an opinion on here first.

Thoughts?

Shawn

Is this a stock radio? Are you saying it never cuts out while using just the FM/AM?

Sorry. I forgot to mention that. It is a stock radio and speakers. I have not fully tested it just listening to the regular FM/AM radio. I also forgot to mention that when the sound does cut out, it will come back back on again if the car is shut off an restarted.

When the sound cuts out, does the display on the radio cut out? Or can you switch stations like normal, but just have no sound output?

I think the radio is internally shorting. Maybe time for an upgrade.

@PAHonda: The display stays on and I am able to see the volume go up and down and the channels/modes change when adjusted. I am also able to turn the radio on and off with no issue with the exception of the AUX mode at times. There have been a few times when in AUX mode when the sound cuts out and the display will no turn off when I go to turn off the radio. After a few minutes when I try it again, it will turn off.

I agree it sounds like a short in the amplifier output. First place to look is to see if there is any damage to or material shorting the rear speakers, since they are exposed in the trunk.

If not, the factory radio may be failing, it happens.

Yes, I would check the speaker wires in the trunk. If one wire comes loose and touches metal it can cut the sound to all of them.
