Usually power supply is the culprit, so you might try to trace the power supply on the circuit board.

Next step is to source a used gauge panel on ebay or car-part.com. I checked car-part.com and there were some available at around $30 avg.

Peli, Same advice. Although I might try a healthy dose of WD40 into the movement for lube.

good luck

Thanks Tx, I'll just need to decide if I feel like paying for a new cluster, or play around with what I have, since it is the second one already.

What was the problem with the other cluster? Is the only problem with this cluster the speedometer?

This sounds like a speedometer problem. I made a post a while back about repairing solder joints on the speedometer board. You will have to search for this post. If you know how to solder, I would repair all solder joints on the speedometer board that you can.

I just bought the car last week. I was told that they had to replace the speedometer, because it malfunctioned...thus the mileage was documented as "unknown".

I've done all the searches on here about the diagnosis. Cruise works fine, everything seems to work except the speedo and odometer. I do have an ABS light that will come on, but that should be derived from the actual sensors and not the cluster issue.

I was hoping to see a picture or pictorial that shows this so called "bad solder-joints" so I could compare and diagnose the potential faulty joints. Seems to be a very common issue, yet I haven't seen a link or repair pictorial anywhere.

I don't think there is a writeup on how to do this specifically. There is a thread about this on Hondatech, but no pics or details.

To get to the speedometer, you have to remove the gauge cluster, then take apart the cluster. to get to the speedometer. All this information is in the 94 shop manual. You can download one. Just go to the link in the Common DIY Threads on top of the gen tech help forum. There is a shop manuals link in there.

From that point, there is a circuit board on back of the speedometer. I think that you can see the small green circuit board on the back. I think that you can remove it, but I do not know how. That board will have solder joints that you will want to inspect. If you know how to solder then you can try to repair any solder joints that look bad. You can take some pics and maybe we can help you out.

When the speedometer is not working, does the cruise control work? If yes, then the speedometer is the problem. If no cruise control, then VSS.

Does the speed stay stuck at 19mph? That is also a classic problem of the speedometer.

If you know how to solder, you can attempt to repair solder joints on the speedometer board, so you can keep the proper mileage.
Mine is stuck on 19-20 mph. Need to try cruise tomorrow. I know that the spedo does correct itself after driving a while.

I'll give this a try. I don't think it's a circuit board issue as it only gets stuck as it's trying to roll over. I think it's probably a gear problem. Just haven't gotten around to taking the dash apart yet among all the other things I'm working on
