I found the service plug and shorted it with a paper clip. When I put the key forward the check engine light came on and stayed on. The SRS light came on than shut off after a second an than came back on. Without the paper clip the check engine comes on and than goes out after a few seconds.

While the timing light test is good, it is not infallible as I know of one case where it mislead. I would suggest trying to start w/ throttle body cleaner or starter fluid injected into intake. If it fails to start and run briefly, then ignition is the problem despite the timing light showing sparks are present. If it starts and runs briefly, then fuel delivery is the problem, suggesting Main Fuel Relay or Fuel pump.

good luck

Worst case situation. After letting engine dry out I put plugs back in, and car started right up. White smoke pouring out of tailpipe, and coolant in oil. Head gasket failure! Could there be other causes like intake manifold being cracked or piston sleeve crack. I made the mistake of not pressure testing the head. Before I do the job over again I want to rule out every other cause. Can a leakdown test help me pinpoint the cause.

There could be cracks in the cylinder head. If you rebuild cylinder head, have it checked for cracks. Also, have head shaved (trued to be very flat) to insure a good seal on your new head gasket.

Piston sleeve crack is possible, but I've never heard of this (Diy'r, not a pro).

I had to do this on my 94EX a couple of years back. No particular event led to the HG failure, just age (~200k miles).

good luck
