Default starting problems 2000

I have a 2000 honda accord 6 cylinder.
The car won't start intermitantly.
It cranks but won't catch.
Every now and then it will click with nothing but dashboard lights blinking.
It seems like there are two different things going on.
Leave it alone for anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours and it starts right up.
Have had it towed to the mechanic, but it starts by then.
Having this problem for quite a few months now.It can run fine for a few weeks, then no start.
I can't seem to get it to any mechanic to see it happen.
Changed the battery, and the starter. No luck.

Am about to lose my mind.
Can someone give me any suggestions aside from changing parts to no avail???

When you turn the key, does the starter spin the engine?

Try this: Turn the key to the II position, but don't try to start the car. Listen for the fuel pump to turn for about two seconds while the check engine light turns on for the bulb check. The fuel pump is a faint buzzing/whirling sound that comes from the back seat, so turn off the blower, radio, etc.. and listen carefully. Let us know if that sound is present when the car is not starting.

Also, when the engine is running, can you get the car to stall out by shaking the key?

This might sound weird, but one of my friend 00 Accord V6 just had the same problem, it won't start just keep cranking when hot, let it sit for like 10 minutes then it will restart fine. Took us a while to found out that it had a very dirty air filter, he said it starts every time now after we changed the air filter.

My mechanic did clean the filter. He doesn't want to have me changing parts without being sure what it is.
The darn thing never breaks down when I leave it there.
I am about to leave it with him for another week.
Hope it doesn't start for him.
Maybe this time I'll get lucky.
Almost ready to dump it!
Any feedback with similar problems and solutions will be much appreciated!

There was a recall on ignition switches for some 98-02 accords. You might want to call your local dealership and find out if this was done on your accord.

Also, stop by a parts store and have them scan for codes. Post the code number on here. This is a free service and may help narrow down the problem.

Does your car have an alarm system installed?

I did try to jiggle the key to cause it to stall.
Nothing happened.I called Honda and they said my vin # never had a recall on the ignition. As far as the dealer nor Honda can see,no repair work was done on the ignition.
I tried to hear for the fuel pump, but not sure what I was supposed to hear.I did not hear anything.
I am about to leave it with my mechanic for the hundreth time.
I asked him if he can check my main relay for the cracks from sotter joints that I have been reading about.
It ran fine 1st start this am.
After two hours I had to leave work, and it wouldn't start Again.
I kept trying to rev the engine and it finally caught.
If he can't find it this time,I have an appt with a Honda Dealer to just leave it for a week or so in hopes that it will not start for them.
Then maybe I'll get lucky and they can tell me waht is causing this.
Any other suggestions are much appreciated.
The car sometimes will run a few weeks without incident, then out of the blue-no start again!!!

i hope it dies at one of the mechanics lot.
Wish me luck.

You might want to listen with your ear to where you fill with gas (cap removed). You will need an assistant to turn the key to the II position.

Had the main relay changed yesterday just in case!
Couldn't hear anything from the fuel pump when I tyrued to turn key to 2 position, but it started right up.
Doesn't seem to be the problem.
Still waiting.
Problem is,it can start for 3 weeks before it conks again!
