I have a V6 2000 accord and a couple of days ago I started hearing a strange noise. Anytime I accelerate I hear something that sounds like a whistle. It only happens when I press on the accelerator. The whole time i'm accelerating it makes the whistling sound, also because of this the maintenance required light has come on. Any idea what it might be????

 

How many miles on the clock, this may be the reason for your light, not the noise, we hope. Can you tell if the sound is coming from under the hood???

 

chk the alternator for the noise .. I have seen a few of those go bad
Also the maint require lite and the noise have nothing to do with each other ,, the lite is set to come on at a certain mileage interval ,around every 7500 miles

 

The maintenance req'd light is just an oil change timer. It is set off based on milage from when it was last reset. If I were you, I'd run the car and listen under the hood for where the noise is comming from. You can rev the engine by turning the throttle body so you can hear the noise. DH is likely on the money with the alternator, but it could be as simple as leaves in the air filter. Let us know when you've identified the source of the noise and we can help you diagnose from there.

 

Do a search with the search function for the procedure on resetting the maintenance required light.
x2 on either the alternator or somethingamiss withthe intake (could be as simple as leaves blocking as falkore said or a small hole somewhere in the hose or box could probably casue a whistle.)
Pop the hood and either rev it yourself via the throttle body, or have someone else rev it for you while you listen and locate the whistle.

 

Thanks for all the advice. The car has a little over 98,000 miles (mostly highway miles) and it is in great condition, until I started hearing the noise. If it is the alternator, does that mean it's about to give out, and at that mileage is there any major maintenance that should be performed??? I've already changed the timing belt.

 

Yes.

If you already had the t-belt done, no worries. Maybe a transmission drain& refill 3 times with 10 minute drives in betweendrain & refills. Check all rubberhoses, maybe a new PCV valve ($3 at Advance or AutoZone)

*L* that's classic right there.... Man the two of you are really hitting it up today, and with Ang relaxing there should be some major post counts hitting the books today... good time for people to ask questions!

 

It turns out the problem was the Tensioner Pulley. The ball bearings went bad and that was causing the noise. I was looking at the alternator like some suggested and the noise was coming from the area right next to the alternator. I got the part and switched it out and the noise went away. Thanks for all the advice.
