Default Super high idle - 1988 carburated

Hey guys, this is my first post here and you all seem
very helpful and knowledgeable, maybe you can help me. I have a 88 Accord, Limited, auto with carb engine. It starts a little rough, and can be a hassle, it will start and idle fine, then it will jump up, way up, to like 3-4000 rpm. And stay there. Warmed up or not. Im thinking its the choke but i dont know dick about cars, but im wanting to try to do this DIY. It has about 345k. Its in amazing condition, and i paid 400 for it so if its screwed its screwed. Drives great, just really high idle. Ideas?

I might not be able to help you much, but this question is better in General Tech so I'll move it over there.

Our resident expert on that generation is Poorman212 & I'll change the title to attract his attention...

Thanks Jim ....I just owned too many of these and "had to" learn how to do things on them because I was a dumb broke kid that needed to get to work to make money for the wife and kids.

To the op. It is a hard call, the car is 30 years old so who knows what has been done before you are getting into it.

There is like two miles of vac hose under the hood, look through it and be sure as much of it as possible it still there and attached.

Next, these had a very early version of the "Honda ELD" so be sure the battery is fully charged and the output of the alt is good.

Next, if most of the OE vac lines are there and no one has really "monkeyed with it too bad trying to fix this issue before you got there....most of these "high" idle issues will trace back to a bad vac thermo valve - ported vac switch - on the back side of the block/towards the drivers side. There is a 3 port switch that feeds/controls the vac to the choke and when it goes south strange high idle issues can and will happen.
