Default Temp Gauge Pegged, I Am Puzzled

During the summer my car was running hotter than normal on 100 degree days only. I installed a new thermostat which didnt change anything, the radiator eventually cracked and had to replace it, the radiatior was pretty gunked up so i figured that was the problem... Until yesterday 55degrees out and temp gauge was all the way to the top. guage would fluctuate ifi reved engine in neutral or or started driving faster????? Timing belt and water pump appear to be in good shape. any ideas guys? thanks in advance
