Default timing

Been awhile since I've been on, I just bought a 1993 accord with a donor motor with less miles. Folks that owned it before me had a friend changed the timing belt and water pump and never got it running. I attempted to fire it up.It acted like it wanted to then had a back fire. I pulled timing belt cover to see if timing was set rite. Cam and crank was right on but notice the balance shaft belt wasnt set rite. Would this cause it to miss time and back fire? And info greatly appreciated

The balance belt would cause the engine to vibrate, but the main timing belt would keep it in time.

When you are at TDC on the camshaft, make sure the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder post on the distributor cap. Make sure the firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2 on the spark plugs.

Did check everything lines up on timing Crank shaft mark, rotor to #1 and Crankshaft to marks. only on I see off is the balancer pulley. Only thing the didn't do was change out seals when I will do since I'm at this point. I shot starting fluid in the throttle body when it back fired, so maybe to much of it? Ill put back together this weekend and attempt to start up. Motor came out of wrecking yard and suppose to have only had 147 k when pulled out of a wrecked car.

Excess back pressure from a blocked catalytic converter might cause a backfire. Engine will be slow to accelerate and stumble badly. Opening O2 sensor bung by removing O2 sensor can remove back pressure to confirm.

good luck

Not sure with Honda's but on Toyota if the oil sender or coolant sender is bad would it not cause to fire up? They said the just put in a new fuel pump and can hear it when key turned on. I'm usre to play with small block chevy that Ive seen distributor is installed 180 off.

Texas Honda,

Me shooting starting fluid into the Throttle body and if to much, you think that would back fire as well? Car was a runner until timing belt broke on original motor.

Thanks for any advises.

Happy Thanksgiving

So the engine you're trying to start was running until it's timing belt broke? It's an interference engine, so most likely some valves are bent. That would explain the backfiring.

Try measuring the compression.
