Default timing belt

just put a water pump in a 95 accord. I replaced the timing belts while i was in there. I did not move the sprockets and reassembled it. Th engine runs fine, but the idle is a little rougher then before I started. There might have been enough play in the belt to be off by on tooth, but am not sure. What do you think? Can it run good if the timing is off by a tooth?
thanks
john

I just did a t-belt on my 04 accord with a v6. I know the engine is different but the princible is the same. I had a tough time trying to align all 3 marks. The first 2 times the lower and the front cam ligned up and the rear cam was off about 2 notches on the belt. I had to slightly turn the cam that was out of wack and restrung the belt. I took me a couple trys!! After you put the t- belt on did you turn the engine over 2 rotations by hand and check to see if the marks line up? Make sure your t-belt tensioner is good. Mine was leaking some fluid. I bought a new one from honda for $105.00. On my accord there are little rubber flaps on each of the covers that lift up and I can see the marks on the crank pully and the cam pullys. If they are not perfectly lined up then your engine will not run correctly and can cause some serious damage. There are a few vid on youtube. Do a search for a 95 honda timing belt.

The car would run rough with the belt being off by one tooth. I made sure that my marks were lined up when I did my timing belt job. You should recheck the timing marks as the previous poster mentioned.

You also want to make sure that you bled the air out of the coolant system as this can mess up your idle too.

would it only idle rough (not that rough) and run really well while driving? Also how do you bleed a cooling system?
thanks

There is a bleeder right around the t-stat housing. Make sure the heat is set to max heat, so you get the air out of the heter core as well.

Was this isse there before the belt replacement....did the old belt break?

bleed the coolant system and see how it runs. When I did my timing belt I didnt bleed the system and it started fine but did some strange things as soon as I put my foot on the gas.

the car idled real smooth before the work. now it is slightly rough. I went in to change a leaky watrerpump, and replaced the belts while i had them off. i did not use the marks, because I did not move any of the sprockets. I will try bleeding the cooling system

set heat to hot. Fan off. Run car at about 2,000 rpms when the cooling fans kick on that means the thermostat is open fully and system has all air out of it. Good luck.

One tooth off can do that. Retarding the cam might make it idle rough while it runs OK at higher RPM.

You really need to take off the upper timing cover & check the timing marks. That's a lot more certain than guessing based on symptoms.
