any chance that a Honda dealership would be confused between timing belts and timing chains?
Absolutely not. I have never even changed a timing belt myself, but I know the difference, and I know the 03 and up 4cyl models have chains. There is no way a tech could confuse a timing chain with a timing belt. Especially since timing chains rarely, if ever, need to be changed (that's the beauty of them.) The only way I can see them getting confused is if you told them you had a V6, or if they thought you said you had an '02 model. But if you told them you had a 4cyl 2003 model Accord, there is no excuse for that. I wouldn't trust them to do an oil change for me.

When a customer sets up an appointment with a dealership he ( she) never talks to the tech , they talk to a service advicer , some of them are pretty knowledgable, some of them are just pencil pusher salesmen that do not know the right from the left ,

Most likely when he called and talked to them, he ( she ) was 1 of those unknowledgable service advicer ..
Or ,
,the service advicer was so cued on making a sale that he ,( she ) did not pay attention on the year of the car ,,all they heard was timing belt ..and all they tought of was ,,money in my pocket ..

Good point ^. I have called my dealerships a few times and the service advisor didn't seem to know much. I guess I have a problem of always thinking the worst of people. The insurance claims industry tends to do that to you

Is there a website that you can type your VIN # into, which will tell you whether-or-not you have a timing BELT or a timing CHAIN ?

If your 2005 Accord LX has the 2.4 liter 4-Cylinder engine, it has a timing chain; the only 2005 engines that came with a timing belt were the V6 models.
