Default Tracking down an oil leak....

I have an oil leak on my '93 accord (F22A 4cyl.) that seems to be coming from the area where the tranny connects to the engine area (passenger side). I have had several other leaks that I have fixed they are as follows.

I changed the;

Oil pan gasket
Valve cover gasket
Oil pressure switch
Distributor (it was bad anyway)
the cam seals

All that and I still have this slow leak. I am grateful that it is a slow leak but I would really like to stop it if possible. Does anyone have an idea where this leak could be coming from??

If it leaks out the little hole at the very bottom of the bellhousing, it could be the rear main seal. Or maybe the input shaft seal of the tranny.

Is it a 5-speed? What about clutch hydraulic fluid from the slave cylinder?

Sorry, it's an automatic. I guess if it is one of the seals you mentioned I better just live with it because it will probably cost mucho $$$$ to have them changed.

if it is in fact dripping from where he mentioned than yes, it requires the tranny to be removed to fix it... mucho $$$ as you stated.... is the leak present anywhere on top of the tranny or only on the bottom? Are you positive it's oil?

I should have mentioned you gotta start with cleaning the engine really good. That helps you find the real source of the leak. But it's still a tedious search.

The oil, it is definately oil, is only on the bottom of the tranny. I seem to have eliminated all the oil on the top of the engine with all the other things I did. I guess there is a seal that comes out of the engine that would be the source of the problem? I cannot see this seal from the outside, correct?

The rear main seal is #32, where the crankshaft comes out the back of the engine. It can produce a small leak for years but sometimes the leak just keeps getting worse.

You have to take the tranny out of the car,& remove the oil pan. Unbolt the seal holder #8 & press the seal out & press the new one in. It's a pretty big job.

Just in case it's tranny fluid, there's a corresponding seal on the tranny shaft.

There's a cover for the lower part of the bellhousing, #2. Maybe you can get that off & look to verify that's really where the oil is coming from.

Thanks Jim, I think the leak is probably small enough to just let it be. I agree it does look like a big job and not worth getting into at this point. The engine is running great and the rest of the car is in really goos shape. With 246,000 miles, I think I can forgive a little leak.

BTW, your posts are GREAT!

Yeah, that's what I'd probably do.

Just keep an eye on your oil level. If it's leaking even a little you don't want to wait 3000 miles before you discover it's 3 quarts low...
