Tranny problem?
01 accord 4cyl Auto 165k miles (New tranny at 50k)
My dad took his car to a couple of his friends who r mechanics and they think the tranny is bad. There is a winding noise coming from under the engine when the car is in park and neutral. Sound goes away when you put it in any gear. He said he felt the car not wanting to accelerate when he was goin up a steep hill, RPM didn't spike. He said that was the only time it didn't accelerate when he really got on the gas. I drove it today and it felt fine, floored it all the way up to 80mpg. Even put it in first and got up to the redline and it shifted fine. Do you guys think the noise when in park and neutral is fromt he tranny or is it something else? The noise isn't too loud but loud enough for me to hear a difference with the windows rolled up at a red light.

Hmm I'm kind of worried my '02 4cyl Auto may have the same problem, even though it has only 28,000 miles. My car takes a while accelerating uphill sometimes as well but i usually brush off the thought of it being the tranny and i figure that because i have the 4 banger it takes longer to accelerate. I really don't know how to tell if my tranny is slipping =/

When the tranny was going bad on my 01 accord the engine would rev before it shifted into gear. I have an automatic and it made me wince every time my car shifted. I keep all my paperwork (ie: oil changes and services). Even though my car was 8 years old and past the warranty Honda still paid for half of a new tranny. Good luck.
Just changed the tranny oil (no metal shavings) and the sound is still there in park and neutral. However, I did noticed that you can't hear the winding noise on a cold start because the engine noise is louder due to the higher rpm.
