I bought this car last summer so this is the first winter I've had it. Since the temperature has dropped below freezing I have noticed that when driving the car from cold the auto transmission makes a grinding (metal on metal) noise for a split second and then dissappears until the next gear change. Once the car is warmed up this problem goes away. There haven't really been any warm days to see if it only happens on cold days. I am worried because I have read all the other posts about how bad this transmission is though none with this specific problem.

I should mention that I changed the tranny fluid this fall and of course used Honda ATF. But I only drained and refilled once because it didn't look that dirty to me.

Any suggestions?

does anybody have any ideas? i took it to the shop but they said they can't duplicate the problem. i think it happens when the car engages into the higher gear, like it doesn't fit together right at first. would changing the ATF help at all?

You might want to go to the dealer for this one, If I am not mistaken, there is a extended warranty for your Accord due to a transmission recall (usually the V6's). Do you have a CEL or does the D4 light blink at all?

 

Thanks habeeb, i will look into the warranty information. i'm not sure what you mean by CEL. the D4 light (if you mean drive in 4th) wasn't blinking. i did end up taking it to the dealer (it's actually there now) and they couldn't find anything wrong with it or any codes when they scanned the computer. I decided to have them flush the system as it may need it anyway and i can't be bothered doing it myself at the moment. i don't know if this will fix it, but at least it won't hurt it.

 

if its cold . warm the car up in neutral. for 2 min. every day. its different than running it in park.

the warantee is 7 years or 107k for the V6's. The best they will do is split the inflated dealer cost of the tranny then charge you in full for the labor to install it. Sorry bro, but I fully expect that your tranny is dead since I had one die in 1 week following a quad fluid change. Ever since the late 90's I've learned that ALL of Honda's tranny's $uck. 4's are better than 6's.

I know a Honda service manager that won't buy a Honda. He told me that they base their entire reputation on the good old days when Honda's never had problems. I guess they learned that they can make more money by throwing problems into their cars like inferior trannies, radio light bulbs that burn out really quickly that you need them to fix and dare I say, PAX tires!

 

well I hope it isn't that bad. the main reason i bought an accord was because i only needed a car for a couple years and wanted something that held its value for when i resell it. if i have to replace the tranny that hardly makes it worth it. but i get the car back today, so i'll see how it goes.
