Default Transmission hard to shift at 35 miles

I have a 96 honda accord, 2.2L 4 cy auto trans. I got it from my brother who had the transmission replaced. The check engine light is on and when driving the vehicle going into the 30mph range, it revs to about a 3.5 and up on the tach. I literally can rev the engine as if it were on neutral and not travel anywhere. After some reving, the transmission catches gear and rides fine. But after a complete stop, to get to full speed is a nightmare. Any ideas?

Check the CEL code(s.) If you don't know how, click on the "Common DIY" sticky, the first thread on this forum, then click on "How to Check CEL Codes." It's pretty easy to do; your '96 has a blue connector behind/underneath the glove box.

Is the fluid level within the hash marks on the transmission dipstick when the car is warmed up but not running?

Maybe you'll get lucky & the mainshaft speed sensor circuit will be open. Since the trans was recently replaced you may want to ohm out the wiring too, if the sensor is in spec.
