Transponder key?
Hi all,need a bit of advice,knowledge.
I have a honda accord 1999 es 2.0 saloon,(sedan)i bought the car last year,it came with only one key and keyless entry fob.which work ok,i want to get another key cut,but all the keys ive found, have been transponder keys.but looking at the keys on offer is nothing like my key.my key is a honda key but it is a solid block on top of key.My question is,Should my car have a transponder key,if so i can only assume reading topics on this
that the original t/sponder key is hidden somewhere on car,Or it doesnt need one.any advice on this would be great, cause i dont really want to strip dash down looking for a hidden key.cheers guys.oh im in uk,if that makes any difference to specs on car security..cheers

UK security system might be different??
What do you mean transponder key? Your key is a Honda key with solid black plastic handle? The keys with remote-lock buttons on the handle came later (2003+?)
Does the instrument cluster have a green warning lamp shaped like a key? That's for the immobilizer. Your key has an RFID chip embedded in that plastic handle, for the immobilizer. You'll have to get one like that, either from a dealer or probably some locksmiths can do that too.

Thanks for info jimblake, yes my key has no buttons on handle and yes i do have a green key logo on panel which lights up..The key is getting very thin and a bit warped, which i think is not going to last much longer. So could i get just a blank key cut(non transponder)and maybe hide original transponder key close to reciever, would that work???or has the original key got to be in ignition barrell, also is there a way i can find exactly what chip is in my original key,as a last resort to buy a new one??Thanks again for any info..And maybe (last resort)could i dissable all honda security and put my own in??(just a thought)??dont know if anyones done it,,cheers

Over here the immobilizer is part of the ECU, & I don't know how to disable it. The receiving antenna is located around the ignition lock cylinder, so you might be able to get a hardware-store key and hide the real one inside the plastic shround around the steering column.
Carve up the plastic head of the key, get the chip out, & glue the chip onto the new key? I really don't know whether that'll work, but if you try then you better glue it on good so it doesn't fall off & get lost.
Finally, shop around locksmiths & even Honda dealers. How much does a proper new key cost?
