The timing belt tensioner parts are only a few months old and when I inspected them last weekend they were perfectly smooth and functional. Absolutely identical to removed parts, so I reinstalled them.

I agree that TB cover needs to be more carefully evaluated and will in line w/ my other post.

I think you could start your engine with the timing belt covers off as long as you put the crank pulley back on. You could just start with top. This way you don't have to take it all apart if it is just the top timing belt cover. A metal to metal noise like you suspect would not sound like the familiar sound of a loose or worn belt.

 

After correcting my timing belt tensioner installation, I restarted engine and squeal is unchanged.

When I stand next to the timing belt cover, I would swear it's coming from there, but when I got very near the starter it seemed to be coming from the starter. Starter motor may be contacting the field magnets. I've heard this sound before on cooling fan motors. It's a horrible squeal. Ithink I'll repair or replace the starter.

I'll also try to confirm noise source w/ stethoscope tube as suggested.
