Default types of engine oil for me:D

hey guys, i have 2000 2DR honda accord LX with a F23A motor. i am running Mobile 1 5W-30 with Lucas synthetic stabilizer. im losing a lot of oil because of running it hard. car does not smoke. im just wondering if i could use 5W-20 oil or 15W-40 or anything like that. what would be the top of the line motor oil for my car. Im also thinking about getting Red Line motor oil as well. let me know what you think.

Engine will run fine w/ any of those motor oils or Walmart Techlube for that matter.

Oil consumption could be blocked PCV valve or hose, forcing crankcase vapor into the air intake. Check for oily air intake downstream of crankcase air inlet on air intake duct.

Check for oil leaks.

I would not be concerned w/ oil consumption < 1qt/1000, although I would search for sources of consumption other than oil control ring bypass. In a well-serviced 4-cylinder, oil consumption > 1qt/1000 is very rare.

good luck

i have been using nothing but a name brand oil,( castrol, mobil, valvoline etc etc ) , 5w20 in winter and 10w30 in summer , i change it every 3k to 3.5k miles ,, never had an using oil issue and some of my cars have over 400,000 miles on it ....
i would go up to 5000 miles on a newer engine ( less than 60k miles ) but after that, oil and filter every 3000-3500 miles at most

thanks for the input guys but it didnt answer my question. i would like to know what type of oil is the best and can i put it in my 4 cylinder and run fine with it. because i know the newer hondas run 5w-20... why do they do that?? and then there are racing oils like 30W 70W and so on. what is going to give me the best performance and .... well best all around.

I think I answered your question but will reword.

Any 5w-20 oil that meets the Honda specification (API SG, SJ?) will work fine. Synthetic oils can increase the oil change period, but it's already up to 7500 miles on many cars. Most don't run that long. My 07 Accord recently went t0 10% oil life remaining on the instrument panel and had 7500 miles on oil. I replaced w/ Castrol 5w-20, but have used Techlube, and other brands of oil based on price of package deals (oil/fiter combos).

Check both PCV valve and hose are working by pinching the PCV hose. The PCV should emit a firm click. I would remove and clean both in any case if you noticed oil vapor entering air duct at the PCV air intake point (reverse flow).

Some reverse flow is normal under high acceleration, but full time flow indicates a problem in the PCV valve or hose.

If PCV valve and hose are clear and you get reverse flow at idle, you have massive blowby volume (too large for PCV to handle), and engine compression rings are likely damaged.

good luck
