!! Vtec or not vtec !!
Actually the timing belt IS DIFFERENT between the two, cam gear is different between the two causing the timing belt to be different (the "tooth" count is different).
Don't worry with the dist - yes there is an internal and external coil dist but really doesn't matter. The wire plugs to the two different dist is different but really doesn't matter.....just re-wire the two and they can be interchanged.

There are still a few unanswered questions in this thread.
#1: We still aren't sure if the head was swapped or the whole engine. Get the entire number stamped on the engine block (and cylinder head) and call your local dealership to see if they can verify the source vehicle for the engine.
#2: Are you planning on swapping ECUs, or swapping cylinder heads?
#3: What was the OEM part number on the ECU currently running in your car?

2. I plan on swapping ecu and wiring up solenoid.
3.I need to check on this but does the metal bracket covering need to come off to see the numbers? Thanks again...

The picture with F22B stamped into the engine is the important one. The numbers below it are the serial number for the engine. You mentioned earlier that you have a H22 head, so where did you get that information?
Just noticed that also. Sorry meant it had "HA" stamped..so the ecu is for LX, checked earlier and confirmed. Head is vtec. Do I call a honda dealer now and confirm the engone serial number? And will it determine if just the heads were replaced or if it is a full engine swap?
Yeah, find out as much as possible about the vehicle that engine came out of. The VIN for the vehicle would be helpful.
I always thought the F22B engine was a DOHC, but the picture of your engine is a SOHC cylinder head.

Ok so.. called dealer and engine belongs to my year and model (96 honda accord lx)... so it looks like it was just a head swap. Ecu is original. Vtec solenoid is not connected. Only thing now I'm unsure of is if the oil orifice in the block was removed..is there anyway without removing head to know if there's oil flow for the solenoid?
