What kind of grease do they use from the factory for the hood latch mechanism?
Does anyone know? I don't think it's silicone grease because I found that it dries up after a week or two exposed to open air and turns into a waxy substance.
They used something that stays "greasy" for quite a long time. I want to remove all of the old grease and re-apply fresh grease because it's become black, there's not enough of it, I want to prevent rusting on the hood portion of the latching mechanism.
I'm referring to the grease that's on the U-shaped hook attached to the hood. If you happen to know a brand name for it that would be even better. Preferably it shouldn't melt the paint off the hook and it shouldn't run off in heat either. Honda's documentation states that it should be NLGI no.1-2 which just describes the consistency but doesn't actually state what it should be.
Any help would be appreciated...

You must be living in a rust-prone area. OK. If I were to seek something that would do these things - I'd:
1) wipe off all the grease and then WD-40 it (removes remaining stock grease - & effectively delays rusting in my experience), wipe it off again and let remainder dry / evaporate over a few warm days - then
2) lube it with something that clings and stays greasy for a long time. Thoughts here are:
A) wipe on "bar and chain lube" designed for chain saws (it's a viscous oil w/ residue that clings to metal, but bulk of lube will run off - sold at Sears, Auto Stores, Hardwares...), then wipe it off and
B) apply general purpose bearing grease available at any autoparts store.
Each is cheap ... rube goldberg type thoughts.
long answer - hope it's useful in your thinking out the issue
Old post, but here's more info on that lubricant (doing brake job this week):
Amalie "All purpose with Moly Grease Li-2M NLGI No. 2" here.
Description on tube:
"Lithium 12 Hydoxystearate soap thickened extreme pressure grease containing Molybdenum Disulfide and Micro Polyethlene Fillers. Meets Ford M-C75-B spec and is all all purpose chassis and wheel bearing lubricant"
When I got my place, there were about 6 of these brand new tubes in the basement.
and from Amalie website:
"Amalie Pro Tac Plus Grease with Moly is a lithium complex grease fortified with molybdenum disulfide that meets Caterpillar’s most stringent “moly” performance requirements. This robust grease prevents metal-on-metal contact under very high-shock loading conditions commonly found in agricultural and construction environments. Applicable in a variety of automotive and industrial uses requiring extreme pressure protection, oxidation inhibition, water resistance, and anti-rust properties, including; disc brakes, wheel bearings, chassis, ball-joints, 5th wheels and others. Amalie Pro Tac Plus Grease is formulated with advanced chemistry to satisfy the stringent performance needs of heavy-duty equipment builders such as Caterpillar,Detroit Diesel/MTU, Kubota, and others."
