Default What's wrong with my car?

When I am pressing on the gas the car drives fine; however, when I release and let the car coast, I get a thud in the peddle and the car shakes pretty bad. It feels as if the car is coming in and out of gear. I switched from D4 to D3 and the thud and shake seems to dissapear. somtimes during the coast i get a shudder for a couple of seconds. Driving in D3 everything is fine. I also have a check engine light on but can't get the code read because Auto Zone is not open on Thanksgiving! If anyone can give me something to lean towards as far as what is causing this and how I fix it...I would greatly appreciate it. I have been haveing a problem with the gear shifter light too. Somtimes it fludders on and off of D4. I have to wiggle it to get it to come back on. The tranny seems to be out of gear when the light flutters. Can i drive in D3 all the way home? I am 1,200 miles from home for the holidays and need to get this taken care of before we head home on Saturday! Thank you again for any advice you may have!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Yeah, you can drive in D3 but you'll get worse gas mileage and risk overheating the transmission.

98-02 Accords, especially 98-00, and especially V6 are known to have transmission problems like you describe. I don't want to say your transmission is on it's way out, but it's likely and you should prepare for a $2000 rebuild/replace bill in the future.
