Default Where is VSS located (GEN 5)

Hi,

The speedometer on my 1995 Accord (4cyl Vtec with MT) is acting erratic. Sometimes it looks dead for 5 minutes or so then acts normal (this can happen any time, at the start or while driving on the freeway, etc.)

I though I'd check the Vehicle Speed Sensor, but I keep looking in the engine bay and can't locate it. Could someone post an image/diagram of exact location of it on this model... I thank you in advance.

If you don't have a Check Engine Light on and the cruise control works, it probably is not the VSS. It may be the speedometer circuit board.

The VSS is located on top of the transmission. At the distributor, look down to the transmission. It should be a little bit further back on the transmission, near the thermostat housing.

RedBull/Doc,

Thanks a lot. Good point, I'll ckeck. So if the cruise control works while driving when the speedometer needle is reading 0 then it's not the VSS? But perhaps contacts/solders in the back of speedometer are loose/cracked etc? I am not sure that is something I can fix on my own.

Yes, if the cruise control works when the speedo is "acting up", then the issue is with the PCB of the speedo unit.

Today the speedometer worked for about 2 minutes then completely died. I was on the freeway and turned on the cruise control and it functioned. So it seems to be time for a speedomater replacement.

How tough is it to get it out?

Go download the service manual (see sticky at top of this forum section, "Common DIY and Other Info Threads") or follow these guides. Note: From the guides below, you do not need to remove the climate control, just remove the center console and unscrew the 2 Philips screws under the center console for the black dash panel. Leave the climate control hooked up.
