Unhappy Why will my 98 Honda accord not crank unless I flood the gas pedal?

Ok so my 98 accord will not crank unless I'm holding down the gas pedal, and if I try to let it idle by taking my foot off the pedal it shuts off. However if I continually keep my foot on the gas pedal it will continue running. Please help!!

Symptom suggests air starvation at idle leading to cutoff. Suggest cleaning Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) and throttle plate/bore w/ throttle body cleaner. Check that IACV is working by applying 12V and ground to connector.

No codes would indicate the IACV is electrically intact, but simply dirty and not opening on command.

good luck

What we need now is more info. What size engine and trim level?

Additionally, has any work been done on the car recently?

Suggest checking idle stability by cracking the throttle plate using shims behind throttle stop. Can you achieve a stable idle?

Also what happens when you pull the connector to the IACV?

good luck

It's a 4 cylinder and 2.3 liter not sure on trim level. And we have done so much... we cleaned the iacv, we replaced the spark plugs and wires, we replaced the o2sensor, replaced the distributor cap.

Maybe plugged cat, pull the front O2 sensor and try running it, it will be loud! But see if you can throttle it up. Or maybe timing jumped.

My guess would also be timing jumped.

That's exactly how mine acts, and the shop told me it's lost compression in 2 of 4 cylinders, aka engine is gone. Mine did die on me while being driven, but that's the only way it'll restart and the way it acts now. No idea If related to yours. This is a 2003 4 cyl.
