Default 92 accord ex exhaust questions

My 1992 accord was backed into on christmas eve day. I have full coverage and have filed the police report/contacted my insurance agent but haven't made a claim yet. My rear bumper was cracked and it pushed my exhaust can back and up.

I thought I would have a shop check it out to see if the exhaust could be re-mounted. If it could, i would just leave the bumper and get on with it. I only paid $1000 for the car and don't care what it looks like, it's just a commuter. When i took the car to Midas, they said the whole exhaust from the manifold back needs to be replaced because it's rusted so badly that it can't be welded to and can't be re-mounted at all. They said they can re-use the cat but everything else gets replaced. I was quoted over $800 for the repair. $96 for labor, and the rest was all parts and taxes. The flex-pipe alone was quoted at nearly $400.

Obviously, I'm not going to put an $800 exhaust system on a $1000 car and I'm sure that Midas is sticking it to me -- what do you guys recommend? I'm not the BEST when it comes to cars, but I have a lot of friends and access to a few shops and all the tools/help I would ever need. Would I be best going to a scrap yard and pulling what I need from a donor car on the cheap, or do those universal flex-pipes work and are they an option?

Thanks again!

EDIT: I've done some ebay hunting, and might have found some viable options. Any opinions on the below links?

Hello,
I have a similiar situation. Mine is a 91 accord ex coupe. How did you make out with what you needed. I also need a manifold, flexpipe, and mid pipe, I can still use my cat and muffler. Which one did you purchase and was it a direct bolt on with no mods? I don't want to spend a lot of money on this car. I found some on ebay for about 80 bucks. Please email me when you can and let me know. mdefran23@yahoo.com
thanks

Thanks for the advice. I rather keep the cat, not looking for any type of performance upgrade, just looking to replace old exhaust which is off car. The cat and muffler are the only parts that are salvagable. If I did dump the cat, what would replace it? Performance cat? thanks again.
