Sounds like you meant that oil was all over the inside of the distributor. Even though you cleaned most of the oil off, there is a chance some residual oil or oil leaking in from the seals may be causing some or all of your issue with the car starting and stalling.

There is an internal seal and an external o-ring.

Before any distributor seal/o-ring replacement, you may want to do some more tests to try to narrow down if the issue is related to a distributor component or something else. See this link:

Unless you are leaking large amounts of oil into distributor, this is unlikely the reason for no-start or weak spark. I had oil draining through a distributor on my 94EX for a long time w/o problems.
Earlier you said you were seeing a spark. If this is still the case, then weak coil is more likely the source of no-start.
