My 19 year old son's 93 Accord is dying while he is driving. There is no warning, any sort of tug or pull, just dies. He can be driving down HWY or side road whatever. My Brother in law (airline mechanic) thought it was the fuel pump and replaced that and the problem persists. He has about 211K miles on the car. Any suggestions for this single mother???

 

When it dies, do the warning lights (oil, battery) come on? If not, it's JUST LIKE he switched off the key. Can he make it happen by wiggling the key?

Flaky electrical part of the ignition switch is not particularly rare for Accords. Check that out.

Fuel pumps rarely stall while running. A fuel pump with a bad pole on the motor might occasionally fail to start, but won't stop while it's running.

If the warning lamps DO come on, then you need to get systematic about checking for lack-of-fuel vs. lack-of-spark.

 

Possible Main Relay failing. easy to swap and determine if the problem. 45 dollars at advance auto. relay is mounted to steering column I believe.

 

I have had the same problem with my 92 and I replaced the whole distributer and that fixed the problem.

 

Before throwing more parts on it, think whether it fits the symptoms.

If the problem is in the distributor, the warning lamps in the cluster would light up when it stalls.

Most likely the same is true if the problem is in the main relay. But your brother-in-law thought it was a fuel pump? WHY did he think that, and how does that relate to the main relay (which switches power to the fuel pump). Tell us something more so we can help.
