Default Big speaker problem!!!

I have an 1989 Honda Accord LXI and when I bought it I didn't have speakers in the back and one in the front door so obviously after a while I blew it up so now I am wanting to buy 4 to put in the car. I have asked several places about what size speakers does it take and the first answer I got was 6 1/2 in the front and back so I bought them. They don't fit, 6 1/2 is too big for the front and doesn't fit on the back either so I took them back. Then I was told that the front may be 4 or 4x6 and the back is 6x9's so I bought them. THe 4's are too small and the 6x9's are too big but my dad said he can try to make them fit.

Does anyone know the correct sizes for the front and rear speakers? Or maybe a site that will tell me the correct size? I had no idea buying speakers would be such a hassle and turn into a mission of some sort.

Thank you.

Hello Brandy..welcome to the forums!

A good site would be to go to crutchfield and look up speaker sizes for your own car...

Thank For joining up...

Last I checked, my 87 has 6 1/2's in the front and maybe 5 1/4's in the rear. But typically, Honda's always have 6 1/2's... I know that in my 90 Civic, I had to cut the front mounting bracket to fit aftermarket speakers.

I've only had my 87 for a week and haven't had much toime to check out the stereo, but in that time, I thought I saw 6 1/2's in the front and something a little smaller in the rear.

i had a similar problem. everything i read said that they were suposed to be 6 1/2's all around. but after i bought 6 1/2's for the front i took the door apart and i found that they were 4's in a plastic enclosure that was placed in a 6 1/2 hole. i was just going to put the new speakers in the hole but i found that the window would not clear. i took a roto zip and cut out 1/2 in plywood rings to use as spacers. and it worked for me just fine. it wasn't the prettiest but its all behind the door panel so you can't tell and it has worked for at least a 1 1/2 years and still sounds great. on the rear i pulled them out b4 i bought new ones and they were 6x9's but most of your after market speakers have a larger "flange" thingy where the screws mount the speaker. i trimed and bent the ones that were keeping the speaker from seating properly. and if i remember correctly in the rear housing was made to fit either 6 1/2's or 6x9's. but on your car it could be different.

and my old 88 civic had 5 1/4's might want to look into that size too.

Best thing to do is look at some 5.25's. Theyll fit without anything more than maybe a small spacer.

Those 6.5's that came factory are pathetically small with a very small magnet so they fit easily. No self respecting 6.5 will fit on those doors without some modifications. But no sweat, a good quality set of 5.25 is just as good as a 6.5. Sure youll lose some midbass but the midrange will be much better.
