Can't say I've heard it myself or heard any opinions of it. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't such a great sub. A CVX may do well with 500w, what brand amp is it?

One of course, SPL is very power demanding.

so I found a type r that I would like to buy off a friend but it is in a hatchback ported box, meaning the port is in the top of the box. Will it work/ is there a way I can make it work or are these boxes best left in hatchback cars??

I've never heard a type-r in a ported box. A sealed box is going to give you a much flatter response curve, while a ported is going to peak more in the low range than the high. A perfectly tuned ported box can sound great, but it must be tuned to the exact sub woofer, which almost ever ported box you can buy is not. From my experience unless you really know what your doing building a ported box, a sealed is much more forgiving and sounds great. You still get plenty of that low end, and the highs are still there. The only down side to a sealed box is it is more susceptible to distortion, but I've found your average guy can't even point out distortion from a sub. I would run the box unless all you care about is showing off to a handful of songs.

yea sounds like i should switch to a sealed box then cause I can tell it doesnt really sound right and what you say makes sense. For now though does it matter which way the port faces? Right now its on the top side of the box as its a prefab hatchback enclosure

That really depends on the car, some say they like different positions. In both my suburban and accord I found facing the rear was the best. Having the port and sub on the same side is the norm, whether it is above, below, or to the side makes no difference.

yes but my sub and port arnt on the same side. If my sub was facing the rear of the trunk for instance, my port would be facing the roof of the trunk.

Then that may not be optimal. Different set ups can sound very different. Personally, I would trash the box, or even sell it on ebay. Then build or even buy a simple sealed box. If you do a bit of looking you will find the sweet spot for a type-r in a sealed. The perfect sized sealed box will also bring out the best in a sub.
