Default Stereo question

Hey, my girlfriend has a 03 Accord coupe and is having some stereo issues. At first the backlights for the clock and buttons didn't work and then it started randomly cutting out. What I mean by that is we would hear a quick little pop and then there would be no sound. The radio would show that it is playing but nothing was coming out of the speakers. She got a new radio and installed it today, the lights and everything work and she put in the security code and it says its playing but still she hears a quick pop and no sound plays in the speakers. Does anyone know what might be the cause of this? I'm not sure what the factory stereo consists of, if there is an external amp but I would like to try and get this fixed for her asap.
Thanks in advance

The radio may have been a refurb, bummer they didn't get that model year's radio right.
