02 Accord EX 4cyl upshift durning coasting

Default 02 Accord EX 4cyl upshift durning coasting

New member here. Got my 02 Accord ex 4cyl a couple of years ago from salvage bc of a head gasket blown on the previous eng. when i got this car it had about 160k drove nice even before the head gasket let go. now with 186k on it and driving it for awhile after it sat for a couple of months while the car was inop, i've been experiencing some noticeable upshifts while coasting downhill before a stoplight and at idle there is a noticeable grinding noise around the bellhousing area. Would this be more of a torque converter issue or would some of these symptoms be more of wear and tear on the transmission, i do alot of in town driving, but have taken this out on the road a few times. 100-200 mile round trips. Any suggestions? I've ran across some threads about checking the solenoids but havent ever done this procedure. Any help is better than nothing, and i know that trying to diagnose a car over the internet isn't the ideal thing to do, just trying not to spend thousands of dollars.

I would check for codes. Most parts stores will read codes for you.

Check the transmission fluid level. When was the last time you changed the fluid?

You can do a resistance test on each solenoid. There are two wires to each solenoid on the 02, so test the resistance across the pins. It should be 12-25 ohms. You can unbolt the solenoid and check for debris in the screen and the solenoid.

While coasting downhill, it may be due to Honda's grade logic.

It may be downshifting for added engine braking when needed; instead of upshifting.

I did notice when i replaced the engine, on one of the cooler lines for the transmission there was an inline filter. At the time didnt think i needed it so i just went ahead and took it out. After doing this didnt think of there being a chance of a tsb on it. Is this possible that i need to put an inline filter back in there if so what micron rating?

On the 6th generation Accord with A/T, if there was a Honda (non-aftermarket) in-line filter, chances are the transmission has been previously replaced.

Good idea to put one back in? Been about 20 k since it has been removed.

Some will say put it back in, others, myself included, will say don't bother, the filter inside the transmission should be more than sufficient.

At this point, I would agree with Shipo and say don't bother.
