(1986 LXi) Idle fluxuations
Im new and i accidently posted this in the DIY section, sorry mods.
ok, so I have a 1986 Honda Accord LXi. The problem is that the idle speed fluxuates from 500 to 3000 rpms all the time. At start up the motor idles at about 3000 rpms, slowly drops to 2500 rpms over about a 5-8 second period, then begins the fluxuation cycle. Sometimes it seems like the motor is actually dying then recovers at the last second. It does this in any condition and the computer sets a code 12, which is EGR valve system. I have tried disconecting the vacuum hose and the wires with absolutly no effect.
I have a theory that it has nothing to do with the egr valve, and that the computer may be setting another code as well but im not sure. The light simply flashes 12 times, pauses and flashes 12 times again over and over.
I have reset the computer via disconecting the battery cable with no luck. I would replace the egr valve except for the fact that it runs about $150 in price. any thoughts?

remove the top off the fast idle valve, chk to make sure that the inner valve is tight ..
get a flat tip screwdriver and try to turn in the inner valve till it bottoms out ,

hey that must be it. I pulled the cover off like you said and covered the valve with my thumb. there was a lkot of suction there and the idle fluxuation became less pronounced. so i thurned the car off and found something that fit and ajusted it as far as it would go.
Now the idle fluxtuates around 1100-1800 rpms same rate of speed. Its a good improvement. Can i assume that i need a new fast idle vavle(idle air control valve)? The cost looks like $80. If the o rings are leaking couldn't i just replace them?
thank you very much for the information.
