Default 1996 2.2 Liter - Engine Noisy On First Start Of Day

I find when starting the engine for the first time, it seems to be noisier than usual.

After at most five minutes of driving, the noise disappears. I only notice the noise when stopped at a light, which always happens.

I'm using high mileage oil, and just filled up with premium gas, based on the articles I've read about carbon build-up.

When the engine is started subsequently the same day, there's no unusual noise at all.

Two comments:
  • It sounds like it is time for a valve adjustment; most likely the cause of your startup noise.
  • Lose the premium fuel, not good for your engine. Carbon build-up is more likely to happen with premium fuel in an engine not designed for that fuel, than using the proper fuel.

Is a valve adjustment something Honda must do?

What should this kind of work cost?

OK, thanks for the info. regarding premium fuel - interesting.

The valves can be adjust by almost anyone.

Do you know when the timing belt and that was last changed? I ask because of the age and miles on the car - assuming the milage in your signature is correct.

EDIT: I now see that the timing belt question is being discussed in another thread you have.
