Question 1999 Honda Accord Tranny?

I have a 1999 honda Accord 6 cyl.
Recently on my way home my (automatic) car made a firm stopping motion.
Confused I decided to push it to the side of the road. Putting it in neutral I
realized the car accepted acceleration and went as if it were in 1st gear. I
was giving the car gas... In Neutral. This is obviously not right, for the car
shouldn't move at all (From stop) in neutral. The Second gear also allows the
car to move, although both limit the speed to 1st gear. When I attempt to put it in Drive (D4) it revs then quickly dies down, when driving if I shift it from
neutral it firmly slows down. Reverse doesn't work as well. The transmition has been giving me trouble before, large slips from 1st to 2nd gear
were present. Has the tranny finally bit the dust? or could it be a sensor or
cable problem? Please help. ANY is greatly appreciated.

You can try draining the fluid and replacing with Honda ATF. It will take about three quarts. You can also clean out the shift solenoid.

I would also scan for error codes to see what problem(s) the PCM is detecting.

Thanks for the help, but it turned out to be a matter of putting it in 1st, and flooring it. Apparently that knocked everything back into place.
