Default 1999 Manual Tranmission 125K

Son drove out of the yard, said something made a noise, then the car would not move in any gear, appears to be shifting OK, can move shift lever through the gears without using the clutch, sounds like something is turning inside the transmission, don't think it is a clutch related problem, no grinding when trying to put it in gear. shift fork(s) perhaps? I have repaired my cars since the 60's but know very little about standard transmissions, (never had a problem with any that I had). Finances are a factor Thanks

Before thinking about internal transmission problems, check the axle shafts.

People have told of the splined shaft that pokes into the transmission, being not-quite-all-the-way snapped into place. It comes out of the transmission - not all the way, but just enough to disengage the axle from the differential.

If it had come out all the way, I think the gear oil would spill out of the opening...

I took a quick look, appears the axle in not in as far as it should be, I had that axle out only a few days before, replacing a bad oil seal, car had only been driven only a few block since as I recall. Now that I think about it, I am not sure what condition the clip that is on the end of the shaft was in. I am going to remove the axle tomorrow and check that clip, and reinstall the axle. I am wondering other than that clip, what keeps the axle locked in place?

Nothing. That clip is all that keeps it in place.

Inspect the clip for damage. If it looks good, make sure that you get the axle to snap back into place when reinstalling. I remember it was a pain to get mine to reinstall on my old 95 accord.
