Default 2000 Accord Coupe: Sudden clutch issues

Hi, everyone. I searched for this topic but couldn't find anything. It doesn't help that I have trouble describing it.

I have a 2000 Honda Accord Coupe 4-cylinder with a five-speed manual transmission. Its mileage is 138,000. I have never have had any transmission issues.

This morning, I experienced some very troubling issues with the clutch. When shifting from first to second (and so on), the clutch is very "shallow," e.g. a full, smooth transmission shift used to involve pushing the clutch to the floor and then easing off back to the clutch's original position, but today, I pushed the clutch to the floor and it was only about a half-inch from the floor (on the way back) when the clutch would give out. This caused me to stall out in traffic (which, as any longtime manual transmission user knows, is very embarrassing).

As I got to work, I realized that, even with the clutch all the way to the floor, it was very difficult to shift from first into reverse and back again.

This only started this morning after years of great service. So, am I screwed? Is there anything I can do? How much is a new clutch?

Thank you, everyone, for any comments or suggestions you may have.

cliburn in Oklahoma.

check you fluid level in the clutch master cylinder...bet it's low or empty. probably a bad slave cylinder, but I'D replace both just to be safe.

Thank you for your help. I checked and it seemed half full to me, but I'm not sure how full it's supposed to be. I just went to drive home from work and it was worse.

I started it and put it into reverse. Before I was releasing the clutch at all, it started going in reverse (propelled; it wasn't on an incline). Once I got to where I put it in first and drive away, I couldn't get it out of reverse. I ended up turning off the engine to take it out of reverse. I then re-started the engine and spent two minutes trying to get it into first gear. Once I finally did, it propelled itself forward with my foot still holding in the clutch. I parked it and had to turn off the engine to get it out of gear again.

sounds like the clutch master is bypassing (it be broken) still would replace both.

I was afraid of that. I assume I'll have to tow it out of here. I'm in downtown Oklahoma City and live 20 miles away. You wouldn't recommend trying to drive it home, would you?

I had the car towed to a transmission shop close to downtown this morning. Hopefully this won't cost me an arm and a leg. I'll update with what the problem was.
