2004 Accord V6 transmission slipping
2004 Accord LX V6 auto
197,000 miles
transmission fluid changed recently
output shaft speed sensor changed recently
I apologize if this is a common post, but I did try searching this forum and others alike and if I did find someone with a similar problem they didn’t get any responses, so I’m trying my luck. My commuter accord is having transmission issues. The car drives fine until it gets warm and then starts slipping and progressively gets worse until it stops moving altogether. What’s funny is if I turn the car off and back on it will start driving again, but again will slip after a bit. Since it was my wife’s car before we were married I didn’t know how old the fluid was, so I started by changing the fluid. My thought was maybe the fluid was old enough it didn’t have the viscosity enough to shift when hot. The car has never produced a CEL nor can my code reader detect any codes or stored codes. However, recently, when the transmission was slipping so bad it didn’t move I managed to get a CEL for the output shaft speed sensor, so I changed that to a genuine Honda part. I wasn’t sure if that was the problem, or because the car would only rev in gear the computer thought it was a problem with the speedometer, so it gave me the CEL and flashing D. The new sensor didn’t fix anything, in fact the car seems worse, but that may very well be because of the constant slipping. Now the car is delayed in shifting to D or R and the car will only drive down the street in my neighborhood before it slips to the point of no movement, whereas it used to take 5 miles or so. I’ve also noticed a clunk sound when shifting into R. It doesn’t make this sound in D. I’m guessing it’s in need of a new/rebuilt transmission, but I was hoping it was something sensor related as it seemed to reset itself when I cycled the ignition. I face a dilemma because it’s been a great car, but it’s really just used for commuting and if it needs a new transmission $3,000 is really more than the cars worth. Wondering if anyone has experienced or heard of similar behavior so I can try some more things on my end before throwing in the towel on the old gal.

About 3 qts drain from the transmission, then you refill with the same amount. The transmission holds about 7 qts of fluid, so you should do a drain/refill, then drive to mix the old and new fluid, then drain refill two more times. So you use 9 qts total to replace most of the fluid.
How many qts did you use? What brand of transmission fluid did you use?
