Default 2004 V6- A/C blows hot air randomly

Hey guys, I'm having a small issue with my mom's car and was looking for some assistance.

A week or so ago I noticed that the passenger side vents weren't blowing as cold as the driver side. When I would adjust the temperature on the passenger side up and then down, it would blow cooler. A few days later, the A/C is blowing warm air randomly. Meaning during a drive, for about 20 min the A/C will blow warm air, then start blowing ice cold air for another 10 15 minutes.

My mother took it to the mechanic and he said it needs a new fan control unit. Parts are 190 and labor 150. He said it is a common problem in these cars. Can anyone give me their opinion on this?

The car has 135K miles, and has never had the A/C serviced.

Sounds like you have auto/dual temp control?

There is a self test you can do of the HVAC unit to see it has any stored "trouble codes".

At the top of this section there is a sticky: "Common DIY Threads and Info" - or something like that. In there, there should be a link to the "how to" on getting the codes.

Did you get a quote with the part number of the part? There are a few things this could be, some of which would "fit" with the quote, others do not.

Yes it's the auto/dual temp control. I'll look it up and see what I find on getting the codes.

I can try to get the part number from my mechanic, according to him this is a common problem in this body style Accord.
