Default 91 Accord problem

Howdy folks, forum newbie here...I have a 91 Accord EX 2.2l 270,000 miles on the original engine.A couple of weeks ago it started running rough, no throttle etc. At first it was only at freeway speed, then it started doing it consistently at all speeds. It also would not idle, surged up from 500 to 1200 rpms for a few seconds and then stalled.

I went thru the fuel system and found no problems: fuel pump working, relay working, pressure at rail, injectors ok. I found and replaced a bad coil and it has a recent tune-up including wires.
After replacing the coil, the car will now idle without stalling and it is drivable but acts like it is missing and does belch out alot of smoke when accelerating.

Could the blown coil have damaged the ignitor?

You may want to consider a replacement O2 sensor. A bad O2 sensor could cause some of those symptoms. Code 43 should be set for a defective O2 sensor, but ECU may not set a code in all cases. Fairly inexpensive, if you buyan ebay O2 sensor. I've purchased universals for < $30 in some cases.

good luck

Checked the PCV valve, it's plugged. I'll pick up a new one tomorrow. Checked the wiring connector on the O2 sensor, no oil or grease contamination. I think I'll install a new one just in case.

I also pulled the plugs, all of them were carboned up pretty good. They were also wet with raw fuel. These plugs are only about 3 weeks old.

You said you checked the pressure at the fuel rail. Was it in spec? If you didn't check the pressure directly, you should check the fuel pressure regulator by pulling the vacuum line and sniffing for gas smell. If it's smells gassy, the daphragm in the FPR is ruptured and leaing fuel into the throttle body through the vacuum line.

PCV replacement may fix your problems. Throttle plate and IACV probably need a good cleaning w/ throttle body cleaner.

good luck

I checked for fuel in the rail, I didn't check the actual pressure - poorly stated on my part.

I changed the pcv valve last night. It was due, but that had no affect on the problem. I also pulled the vac line from the fuel pressure regulator and I did detect a bit of a gas smell. I'll replace that and plan on cleaning the throttle body and iacv this weekend.

Appreciate the help!
