91 Accord timing belt. Need advice
Hi guys.I do not owa a Honda but my son's best friend has a 91 Accord that has developed a timing belt problem. His dad can not help him with this and they can not afford to have someone do the work. I will do my best to help them with this problem. I will also buy the parts if I need to. what I need is some advice on the difficulty of this job. I do most of my own repairs but I have never owned a Honda. This past summer this Honda would not crank when it was very hot outside so i went on-line and found out that there was a cold solder joint problem with the main relay under the dash and I removed it, resoldered the joints and the car cranked fine after that fix. That was an easy fix and I don't think replacing the timing belt is going to be that easy. I need to know what to replace while I'm replacing the belt and about how long this will probly take me to complete the repairs. Any help would be great.

If the timing belt broke, then the valves or pistons could be damaged. It might need a valve job.
One tool that will help make the job go smoother is a crank pulley tool. They are about $30. I thought removing the crankshaft bolt was the hardest part of this job. I bought a deep 19mm 6point impact socket, a 20' extension (1/2' diameter) and a breaker bar (with a 5ft pipe over it). That bolt is on there very tight, and you will need the long extension to get the breaker bar outside of the wheel well. I snapped three cheap extensions when I was trying.

The job isn't bad, but it is tedious. Make sure that all of the timing marks are lined up. Expect it to take a full day if you are working by yourself. You can buy all the parts needed as a kit. You can download a 91 shop manual from http://www.hondahookup.com/manuals/ for more detailed instrucitons.
As for parts, http://stores.ebay.com/Pirana-Motorsports sells a kit for about $200 with everything you will need to do this job (belts, oil seals, valve cover gasket, water pump, tensioner bearings). Since this is a 91, the tensioners should be replaced, because the bearings start to wear down.

if you do this yourself its going to take at least 3-5 hours. you need a timing belt, water pump, alternator and power steering belts, also if the tensioners are bad then replace those as well. our DIY section may have something on timing belt replacement. its a long drawn out messy job but something thas imperative that it be done.

Other things to consider are the shaft seals and the 'oil pump' seal. Also the water pump.
Any questions, feel free to post back
