Flushes on this year are sketchy at best drain and fills are the ticket... Also, some people seem to think that synthetic oil is kosher In the tranny" what does the fluid lok like?

It should, it's conductive. I just tested one.

Most of what I have read says to use Honda ATF. In my 95 shop manual it says to use Honda ATF or and equivalent Dextron2 ATF.
That's what I observed. CEL stayed on.

Drain and fills are what I planned to do. I have my first 4 qts of DW1. The fluid looked clean on the dipstick to me but the history of the car is unknown.

I did one drain and fill tonight, drove it around for a while through all gears, then another drain and fill. It was actually a lot dirtier and older than I thought. It is now shifting way better and what I'd call probably normal. I have enough oil for another d&f so maybe in a few days or so.

Anyone know why old oil makes it shift hard?

IMO-I bet it was changed with DEX fluid, seen before where someone used it had the same issue, changed to Honda fluid and things got better.

Seems like it's shifting hard again. I wonder if the old oil in the torque converter has now made it's way around the tranny again. I'm thinking another flush?

Unfortunately, changing the fluid is about the only maintenance you can do on the transmission. You can pull the shift and lockup solenoids and clean the screens and solenoids with some throttle body cleaner. Readjust that cable.

The other thing you may want to try is cleaning out the throttle body and the EGR ports. This helped my engine run much smoother on my 95 manual accord. Maybe this will help shifting?

Fluid cycling is pretty fast. You can empty entire transmission volume in perhaps 1-2 mins at idle.

See "10 min atomatic fluid flush" on youtube for how to swap entire fluid volume easily.

good luck

Hey, that's a great video. Wish I would have known that before I bought 8 quarts of spendy Honda fluid.

Here it is:
