As much as you can try to mark & match the position, it's really about the timing of the internal sensors in the distributor. You really should use a timing light to position it properly.
If you were removing and reinstalling your same distributor, then you could try to mark it as accurately as possible. No sharpie markers, but a fine scribe so you can actually position it accurately.
