Cool 95 Accord A/C Compressor Bearing

Hello, this is my first post on this site so forgive me if this is in the incorrect place.

I recently had my car taken to a mechanic, and was told that the bearing in the a/c compressor is bad. Being 15 years old, I've been pretty happy with the very minimal amount of repairs I have had to put into the car, but since the cost of repair was estimated to about 600 dollars I decided to tackle this one myself. How would I go about doing this? Would I be able to replace the bearing, or would I have to get a new clutch or something? I dont know too much about replacing stuff like this so as much detail as possible would be very appreciated ;D

Thanks,

Mace

There's more than one bearing in the compressor. If you're lucky, it's an external bearing in the compressor clutch.

4-cylinder? V-6? Automatic trans? These things DO make a difference.

This really belongs in General Tech, so I'll move it.

Talking Hello New Member

Go to your local AutoZone, O'rileys and check out the price of a Lifetime Rebuilt one and then ask the parts person who they know who would replace the parts correctly and for a fair price. They will more than likely have a few answers for you...more than likely theirselves as replacement mechanics...most of them do installs off the clock for cheap...most are ASE cert. @ AutoZones..

Good Luck With It

Ask your mechanic if the faulty bearing is the compressor pulley bearing. If it is, then it isn't too bad of a job to tackle. The online manuals thread in the DIY section has a spoon link I posted with a 94 shop manual. Look at the a/c section for the procedure.

I did this on my accord, so I can give you more detailed instructions if you want to tackle this yourself. There are other things you can do with the compressor partially taken apart to service your a/c system. Like replacing all of the o-rings in the system to prevent leakage, etc.

Default Thanks!

Thanks guys for all the replies!

I have a few more details that would definitely help:

Engine is a v6, with automatic transmission. And I believe the faulty bearing is one on the clutch, since he offered to replace the entire clutch. Would I be better off replacing the entire clutch, if I could find one cheap online?

Now that I know it's a V-6 I can put up the right picture...

Looks like you can get the clutch set (#4) but not a separate bearing per-se.

The idler pulley is right there (#13) so if he really meant that bearing, it would be even easier.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info! I will clarify with my mechanic so that I can be sure I'm referring to the correct part. Glad I found this site, since I plan to stick with Honda for quite a while Lots of good help on here.
