97 Accord Ex..Has anyone replaced their transmission?
Hey guys,
So here's my deal, I have a 97 Accord Ex Wagon with 173,000 miles. I've been dripping trans fluid for about 5 months now, it leaks from the CV axle seal passenger side. I also have a hum coming from the front end (begins at about 35mph) that sounds similar to a bad wheel bearing. I replaced these first in an attempt to remedy the hum. That didn't work.
I did a bit of research on the leak and read it's probably a worn carrier bearing causing excess play allowing fluid to leak from the seal. It looks like it just as easy to replace or rebuild this transmission.
So, has anyone here had their tranny replaced or rebuilt, and roughly what was the cost? Does about $2,000 sound about right?
Thanks,
Brad

Have you tried to replace the axle seal?
The differential bearing problem wasn't common until the 98 trans failure.
Or you could grab the inner joint and shove up and down to check for play in the diff bearing

I haven't tried replacing the seals yet...but I have been under there with the car on jack stands. I'm able to sightly wiggle the axles back and forth.
I bought this car in January and it included receipts for both cv replacements about 10k miles ago. I'm pretty sure they're re man's. Ive also noticed a slight shimmy from the front end under acceleration.
I guess I'm debating whether or no to have the axle replaced with NEW ones and a set of seals..

UPDATE****
Well the wagon was due for a new set of tires, I bought a set of Cooper CS4's, had them mounted and balanced.
As soon as I left the parking lot I noticed one thing....the car was as quiet as can be
I guess I was looking to deep into that annoying hum. This weekend I will be replacing the axle seal to resolve the slow drip of tranny fluid, hopefully its just a bad seal.
Cheers!
