Ended up replacing the starter, and it's working great now.

Would have been nice to avoid the $100 for the starter by it being a simple adjustment, but when we took it out and had it tested you could just hear and smell that it wasn't happy.

 

Thanks for posting your solution. Also,Be sure your daughter knows to try holding the brake pedal down and moving the shifter into P etc if this happens again.Might keep her from getting stranded somewhere.
