Since your ABS light came on, you should check for error codes on the ABS, ECU, and TCU. Go to this link: http://www.dhost.info/accordinfo/howto/cel.html and follow the instructions.
The check engine light and D4 light should blink codes that are one number. A long blink =10, short =1. The ABS gives codes that are one number then a sub-number. Like 1-2, 1-3, etc. You might have to turn the key to the II position a couple of times to read all of the codes from the different lights.
Post the codes on here and we can help pinpoint the problem.

The 96 accords can have their ECU read with a code reader, but I'm not sure that it can read the TCU or ABS control unit.
Shorting that service connector takes about two minutes to do and is pretty simple. The codes stored will definitely help determine what is causing your problem.

Sounds to me like a coil problem (but further diagnostics are needed to be certain). V-4's are only on motorcycles. As mentioned, Honda's use either a V-6 or an inline 4. Both the 4 and the 6 can have VTEC.

You still need to short the service connector and count the binks for the ABS code though.
