brake lamp problems
the brake lamp light comes on about 5 min after starting the car and the right and 3rd brake lights dont work. they word when the car is cold and hasnt run for 12 hours for about 1 min. then only the left works. i replaced all the bulbs and didnt help. the tail lights work when the headlights are on but only the left brake light works. Is it a faulty brake pedel switch or a fault in the wiring somewhere? thanks

RE: brake lamp problems
I think you need to look into the wiring and connections. What is the year of your car? If one brake light works then I would say pedal switch is good. If you had moisture in the trunk you might have some corrosion.

RE: brake lamp problems
its a 91 accord lx manual.. now they are off all teh time except the left one works. i replaced all the bulbs and its not the bulbs. and the brake pedal switch owrks fine. is there a place between the brake bulbs and the pedal switch that could have failed?
also the one in the window (3rd brake light) should i put some wd40 in the connections and sockets of the bulbs??

RE: brake lamp problems
I think you are going to need to break out a test light and start working from the tail lights forward. It sounds like a short somewhere. Before you go nuts looking into places check all the connections from the fuses to the bulbs. I don't recomend this as the correct way of doing things as you might end up with an electrical nightmare but you could use a jumper wire from the one tailight that works to the others to get them to work. Once again I don't recomend this. Also check your ground wires, sometimes there's a few tucked away in the trunk.
Can't say about the WD40 but I know the WD stands for water displacement and I have heard some people put a little in their electrical connections.

RE: brake lamp problems
FIXED IT!!! ok i tested every non working bulb with my continuity tester. took 10 min. no power was getting to any of the right trunk, right side, and center 3rd brake lights. The left trunk and left brake light were working fine, and all tailights were on when the lights were on. My problem was in the brake light circuit after the center and right bulb (that are on the same branch) branh from the left light, which is alone on branch. So i wired a positive wire from just before the bulb on the left side to the positive wire on the right brake bulb. Hit brake pedal, the right brake lights work, still no center or right trunk, but i have right side now and car is arguably legal, here in MT. then i wired a positive wire from the connecter from the left trunk bulb right into the connector to positve feed into the right trunk bulb. didnt cut a single stock wire. jsut stripped a 3 foot wire on both ends and flugged it in the back of teh connecter, running positive to positive. hit the brake pedal, all five lights work, including the center 3rd light, and BRAKE LAMP indicator goes off in car. i sealed everything up relly good with electrial tape.... it is really permanent now. So there was a short going to the right trunk bulb, which tripped the sensors and shorted out hte entire right brake light wire branch.... which really sucks. I was eating my nails and crying (exageration) ovver this, cause i REALLY REALLY REALLY HATE ELECTICAL PROBLEMS!!! i used to own a mazda rx7, and the wire quality and electrial system from mazda is sub par. this took onyl 15 min to diagnose and 15 min to fix, and it looksgood and is permanent, and im 17 and in high school and my shop is the curb. anyway, ive seen many ppl post haveing the same problem and ppl tell them to clean everything with wd40. I did all that, but nothing needed it everything looks brand new. GOOD JOB HONDA making quality things. but moisture seems to destroy the trunk brake light system though. But with 280,000 miles and a otherwise perfect car, i cant really complain. So hope this helps ppl.
1. Inspect and replace every bulb in the system.
2. clean all sockets and connections with wd40
3. if that doesnt work, start testing for voltage at all the bulbs, and if u think u are competent and trust yourself enough, start wiring.. BUT BE CAREFULL HACKING UP A CARS WIRING SYSTEM CAN LEAD TO ELECTRICAL NIGHTMARES!!! AND HONDAS SYSTEMS ARE FAIRLY COMPLEX AND HAVE MANY SENSORS, RELAYS, AND IF THEN SYSTEMS. SO KEEP THINGS SIMPLE WHEN U ARE REWIRING.
or just take it to a mechanic and spend lots of money
PEACE!!
