Bumper Mount Question
This is regarding my '87 Accord LX restoration... after months of delays I finally resumed work on it, sort of. I have an issue with the front bumper hanging too low, and I discovered that some mounts were rusted out. To clarify just where these are, you remove the plastic portion of the bumper, then the long bumper bar, and you find these two small brackets to which the bumper bar attaches (one on either side). Each contains an inner and outer section, which oddly have a bushing between them. The inner portion of these were rusted beyond repair, and since replacements are not available, something will have to be improvised. I'm thinking remove what's left of the inner portion, weld a solid piece of metal in its place, and drill / tap new holes of appropriate size, location, etc. What I need to know is... just how important were these bushings, and what effect if any will it have to omit them? I'm really not sure why the mfr put them there in the first place, since they serve no purpose in impact protection.
Thanks for any help.
