Default A/C Problems on '97 Honda Accord EX

Hello all and thanks in advance for any and all help!
So, I am the owner of a 1997 Honda Accord EX Sedan 4 door. I bought it early January and I live in Denver area so there was no need for air conditioner until now. The previous owner was family and they told me it had worked well in the past.
Recently, I turned it on and it blows semi-cool air. We thought the Freon was low so we bought a can and a gauge and tried putting some in, but the gauge registered full. So, that's not the problem.
However, even more recently, when you turn it on, there's a shrill whine coming from the vents that lasts a few seconds then stops. But, when you rev the engine or push on the gas to accelerate it comes back really loud. So, we know it's an engine powered component.
My guess is a/c compressor and I have a mechanic that will check everything next week, I just want to brace myself for the cost of a new one.
Has anyone else had this issue and how was it resolved?
Thanks for the help again/

It really depends on what is causing the noise, and I would definitely start at the compressor. The compressor could be shot, it could be the clutch, the clutch gap, the the bearing in the a/c compressor pulley, or a loose belt.

Take a look at the compressor pulley with the engine turned off. The clutch is the plate that sits on the outer edge of the pulley. If the clutch can slide in and out, maybe you just need to snug up the 10 mm bolt on the end.

Could anyone of those things cause the compressor to not work properly? I don't care about the noise itself, just that the a/c blows cold air haha.

How did you measure AC pressure? w/ engine running and AC on or other? The low pressure only gauges on most OTC setups only give a rough idea of charge and can be deceptive.

Noise is likely from fan motor. Worn bushings can cause a screeching noise. Fix is new blower motor. Relatively easy job.

good luck

My dad had a gauge that he uses on all the cars. The car was running and the a/c on high.
I will take it to our mechanic this week and give an update on what he says. Thank you for your input.
