Pull the plug wire off each cylinder "one at at time." If it is a rod, the noise will go away when the you reach the bad cylinder. FYI, if it doesn't go away, you likely have a main bearing.

it sounds fine until i hit the gas. i have looked at alot of forums and i get alot of different suggestions but i dont want to end up dumping loads on cash on fixing it or swaping the engine. i have been driving it for a thousand miles or so like this. could it be anything else

Main bearing are what hold the crank in position in the crankcase. Rod bearings are the bearings that connect the piston/connecting rod to the crank. If you hear the rap on acceleration, then it is likely one of the main bearings that is damaged. If this is the case, you are looking at pulling the engine, removing the crank, have it mic'd and installing a new bearing, after they clean up the journal (this is where the bearing sits). A machine shop can clean up the journal and you can install an oversize bearing. I'd take the car to someone locally that you can trust. Where are you located, maybe someone here can suggest a mechanic, or even come over a take a look at it.

I missed this post, you have been driving it for a 1000 miles like this? I doubt if it's a main.

Well, I can throw one or two out.

1) Any stored CEL codes?
2) Check the valve lash
3) Pull the heat shield-be careful not to break the bolts- and check for cracks in the exhaust manifold

All of these only cost a bit of time....most of the time the vc gasket can be re-used.

Have you determined what the rap/knock/noise is?
